The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has intensified its efforts to support the rupee, according to a report from Reuters. The central bank's firepower has been boosted by a significant surge in deposits from non-resident Indians (NRIs), giving it more room to act in the currency markets.
Reuters reports that the RBI is stepping up its intervention strategy as it seeks to manage the rupee's value. The influx of NRI deposits provides the central bank with additional resources to defend the currency against volatility. This development comes as the rupee recently touched a two-month high, a move attributed by other outlets to the RBI's actions.
The reports indicate that the RBI's intervention, along with dollar flows from foreign banks, has helped push the rupee to its strongest level in two months. One report noted the currency gained 28 paise to close above the 95 mark against the dollar, a level not seen in that period. However, other coverage also points to headwinds, with one report suggesting the rupee was set to open lower due to surging oil prices and rising US yields.
